SUNNY ADE! CELEBRATING A MONUMENT AT 70

SUNNY ADE! CELEBRATING A
MONUMENT AT 70

My friends all, it is with great pride that I present today, a special tribute to the legendary KING SUNNY ADE who is celebrating his 70th birthday this month. For decades, his music has regaled us in a thousand and one ways. Beyond the sometimes upbeat, sometimes mellow danceability of his rhythms, he has for more than five decades been one of our voices of reason, helping to give direction to a nation with the didactic element in his music. He has engraved in our hearts a love story that time will never erase.

His music is history in the ear, current affair in the air and edification in our olfactory aura. His music is also a conjurer of sweet and sad nostalgia. It is the music that reminds you of your birthday celebrations of ancient days, when you tilted your left shoulder forward to swag to the pulsating ambience of his upbeat "synchro systems" sounds; it is the crooning that reminds you of your now late mother who used to sing "Owowo Obele" to lull you to sleep; it is the song, as in "Ki ni n ba ro/Iya mi n'ile nko?/Ile l'abo isinmi oko", that reminds you of faraway home whenever you sojourn abroad. And what about his "thunder wire," the pulsating, sonorous strumming from his masterful guitar play to which you twisted and twirled while you hum along? Such is the immensity of his musical talent and staying power that he has been able to create a world in our consciousness, the Sunny Ade world.

Sunny has always been the scourge of the mischievous. He reserves the acerbic part of his music for such. Not only does he squeeze the ear of recalcitrant children with heart rendering and ear tingling words and proverbs, all with the throbing rhythm of his danceable beats, he sanitizes the soul with the ancient aphorisms that have made his native Yoruba such a seminal and rich language.
Think you're mischievous? Sunny Ade is your perfect nemesis. In his evergreen 1979 album, JA FUN MI/ALOMODE O MELA, he not only excoriated the exponents of mischief with his witticism and high language, he admonished them to submission with the poetic essence of his wisdom: VAINGLORY is Sunny Ade's pet aversion. and he used this album to attack such. Let me attempt to translate one of such: "The magical exploits of the deer/Is puny wonder to the hunter's dog/And the narcissist pageantry of the duiker/Only exposes him as a meer/Okra stealing animal!" Another is: "The vulture lays and hides its egg/What does he want to achieve?/The lizard too lays and secrets its egg/Why does it waste its time?/Neither the vulture nor the lizard/Is capable of meal-worthy eggs." Such alluring poetics!

And when he sings of love, Sunny Ade sings like a dream. "I'm Searching For My Love", "365 Is My Number", "Aya to P'awo" etc teach us the virtue of true love, of fidelity and faithfulness. Most wives courted in the early 70s to the late 90s would remember how their suitors had used Sunny's lyrics to pass on their messages of love, and, conversely though, some have also used parts of the lyrics to torment rivals who had dared to have a piece of their women. And women also used Sunny's music to pave some ways. In love and in war, there is something for everybody in the Sunny Ade repertoire.

For so long, Sunny has taught our nation to keep grasp of its groove but, like recalcitrant children, we didn't seem to have listened. In his "Igba to bo lowo Ila,  Ila ko/When the okra lost its groove, it withered," Sunny reminds us that we must never treat with levity what makes us thrive. Did we Listen? For decades of our nationhood, we have wallowed in this self denial and the results are there today for us to see. When we were being carried away by the oil boom, he reminded us of the wonders of agriculture in "Ko sagbe mo l'oko/Farmers have abandoned the farms". The social import of his music is best seen as he admonishes his compatriots about the need to return to the agricultural culture of the land for the sake of food sufficiency in the face of universal recession. What Sunny Ade warned us about decades ago has now become a monumental national problem.

His music is also a celebration of the culture of his immediate race, the majesty of their pantheons and the Yoruba tendency to celebrate excellence. That is why you find him singing paeans to Ogun, the native creative deity of his ancient Ondo forbears. And most of us lucky enough to still be capable of speaking our indigenous Yoruba in the face of the eroding power of Englishsurely learnt a few or more proverbs from Sunny Ade.

His music can also be overtly religious. In "Destiny" which he fatalistically believed to be "unchangeable", he did not forget to salute and honour Oba Dafidi (King David), the primogenitory proto-musician. He sings: "Mo s'eba Oba Dafidi; Ohun l'olorin akoko..." "I salute King David, the pace-setter crooner who used psalms and poetry to sing the praise of the Almighty." The tendency to praise the rich and affluent is one controversial part of his opus but even when he praises for commercial or edification import, he does it with lyrical style and artistic panache. His propensity for intellectual variety is simply amazing.

Sunny's music is not only a one stop centre for life's variety, the store house of joy, of dance, of wisdom, of reflection and of relaxation, it is also a repository of history.Through his music, the monumentally sad event of 1976, when General Mohammed was assassinated is relived by those still in the womb at the time. And through it, those who did not witness the epochal Challenge Cup matches of the 60s and early 70s are able to relish the moments. Sunny Ade's music is a veritable library of current affairs, your knowledge ombudsman in times of ignorance.

I certainly cannot exhaust  the infinite relevance of Sunny's art in one article and this discourse will definitely continue. All I can say for now is that long after the mortal garbs of this icon have been shed, his star will never fade; it will glow perpetually like an eternal flame. Kare o, Egi and happy birthday!

AMBODE DONATES LAND TO GERMAN FIRM INVESTING $75M IN LAGOS ECONOMY

AMBODE DONATES LAND TO GERMAN FIRM INVESTING $75M IN LAGOS ECONOMY

GOV. AMBODE AND PRESIDENT GAUCK OF GERMANY AT A RECENT DINNER IN HONOUR OF THE VISITING GERMAN LEADER. THIS STORY IS A FALL OUT OF THAT VISIT WHICH WAS INSPIRED BY AMBODE'S POSITIVELY AGGRESSIVE INVESTMENT DRIVE

Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday demonstrated his commitment to attract foreign investors into the state as he approved land for the establishment of a $75 million building/construction tools manufacturing factory in Lagos.

The factory, to be owned by the Knauf Group, which is a German firm and one of the world’s leading manufacturers of modern insulation materials, dry lining systems, plasters and accessories, thermal insulation composite systems, paints, floor screed, floor systems, and construction equipment and tools, will train architects, civil engineers and craftsmen on modern trends and technologies in the construction sector.
The firm, upon completion, would create 25,000 direct employment, while at least 800 Nigerians will be trained annually in the first phase.
Ambode, who gave the approval when he received a delegation from The Knauf Group, said the approval for the land became imperative in view of the need to encourage investors to continue to invest in Lagos.
The delegation was led by a member of the Management Committee of the firm, Isabel Knauf and Consular General of German Embassy in Lagos, Ingo Herbert.
“I must commend the German government and The Knauf Group for showing something important to all Nigerians. This is a great pointer to the fact that you believe in the Lagos economy and also believe in the future of Nigeria and I like to encourage other investors to emulate what your firm and government is doing in Lagos and as they show interest, we will not hesitate to give them the necessary support,” he said.
Earlier, Isabel Knauf said the team was at the Lagos House to brief the governor on the progress made so far since the project started in September 2015.
According to her, the firm has 23 training centres all over the world training about 14,000 people annually, saying they would like to build the same training centre in Lagos where architects, civil engineers and craftsmen would be trained on how to technically install their products.
She said upon completion of the factory, the firm would create 25,000 direct employment, adding that the training centre would cost about two million Euros to establish, while at least 800 Nigerians would be trained annually in the first phase. (Story courtesy of Nigerian Tribune)

SUPERSTAR KWAM 1'S WORDS ON ENJOYING ONE'S WEALTH CREATIVELY

That Fuji Superstar, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall has paid his due in the world of music is no news. Many times over, he has proved to be a great Lagosian, expanding the horizons of the city beyond our wildest imagination. While many know him as a workaholic, quite a few know him as a man who loves to enjoy his hard earned wealth. Want to know his view about living the dream, we present below the sight and sound of this icon, truly enjoying himself and giving reasons for doing so in his own words:

KWAM 1'S BED ON THE LUFTHANSA FLIGHT FROM NEW YORK TO LAGOS

THE SUPERSTAR TRULY LIVING THE DREAM

"Honestly we need to discuss this, why people uses the word "OLOWO LOMA KUURE." Since I was a young man in my 20s, many things people just seeing me doing today I have been doing,  like traveling abroad on FIRST CLASS or PRIORITY CLASS. One thing I never liked in my life is, why I should have to wait until some class of people get out of an aircraft that took all of us to the same destinations. They would say "OLOWO LOMA KUURE."

When we used to travel those days in the past to places like London, Rome, Italy, France & Madrid in Spain, very serious people studying HARD went to Germany or USSR Soviet Union then but now Russia... Hmmmmm Oju ti n la sii. AMERICA is ORUN Kalo-Kabo..
Gone were the days my people...

I remember vividly one of my Holiday Trips to London England. I was to stay in my friend's house then on Queensbridge Road London S.E, the Late Gabisiyu Alani Aderemi, may God forgive his soul. UK Immigration followed me to his house that evening to know whose Address I was trying to describe for them. That evening I felt proud when Alani came out with his wife then, my darling sister Hadja Basirat Abimbola Dada to say they were my hosts on that trip. Why because, how come a man flying on First Class could not properly describe where he was going? Honestly "OLOWO LOMA KUURE."

But the truth of it is that, many have that money but either refused to spend it for reasons best known to them or just out of "STINGINESS"
Emii ole wa so owo ntemi ooo...
Baa nawo kope kowo o tan
Bako baa nawo, kope kowo maa tan
Bibeli iwe Mimo tii soro "Asiwere N ko orojo, lai komo eniti yio maaa..
King of World Beat ( King Sunny Ade ) has said it in one of his beautiful songs & it goes thus:
"OLOWO A JOGUN OWO, A JOGUN IYI, ATUN DI GBAJUMO LODE, ASIRI WON ONI TU." In conclusion my people, pls spend ur money well and remember you will not go to heaven with a kobo out of it.

Lastly "Maa jaiye oni o, mio meyin ola o,
Maa jaiye oni o, mio meyin ola o."

Have a good evening aboard Lufthansa Airlines flight from New York via Frankfurt to Lagos Nigeria. AIYE SI NLO NONI."

You have heard from the horses' mouth. Need we say more?

LIVERPOOL INVOKE THE SPIRIT OF ISTANBUL ON ANOTHER NIGHT OF GLORIOUS COMEBACK

History was again made last night at Anfield and, coming in big way on a night of great exhibition of resilience and belief, Liverpool Football Club re-affirmed their reputation as the Comeback Kings of European Football by up ending the spirited display of German Club Borussia Dortmund! The final score: LIVERPOOL 4 DORTMUND 3, AGGREGATE 5-4.

We bring you the full story of this extraordinary night courtesy of our partner, ESPN:

Liverpool complete epic comeback to dump Dortmund from Europa League

LOVREN NODS IN THE EYE-POPPING DECIDER

LIVERPOOL, England -- Three points from a raucous, epic night at Anfield as Liverpool come back to eliminate Borussia Dortmund from the Europa League ...
1. Liverpool complete famous come
And so Jurgen Klopp somehow won the Jurgen Klopp derby. Astonishingly, Liverpool conjured victory from the jaws of defeat with a display of spirit to eliminate the Europa League favourites, condemning Borussia Dortmund to a first defeat of 2016 and giving Klopp a memorable, magnificent victory over his former club.

JURGEN KLOPP WONDERING HARD WHEN THE GOING WAS TOUGH
The game had entered injury time on a knife edge when Dejan Lovren, the man whose penalty miss had resulted in their elimination from this competition last season, made another decisive impact, heading in James Milner's cross. Liverpool, who had been 2-0 and 3-1 down on the night, were 4-3 winners. The hosts scored three goals in the last 25 minutes, four in the second half. It was evidence of a never-say-die attitude, illustrating the belief with which Klopp has imbued not just his players but the Anfield crowd.

ORIGI'S LIFE-LINER WHIZZES IN
ORIGI'S RUES AN EARLIER MISS

Divock Origi was first to reduce the deficit. Then, after Marco Reus scored, Philippe Coutinho exchanged passes with Milner and found the bottom corner of Roman Weidenfeller's net. Next Mamadou Sakho stooped to head in Coutinho's corner and finally, up stepped Lovren. Liverpool had famously scored three second-half goals in Istanbul 11 years ago in one credibility-defying comeback. This time they got four. They may yet win the Europa League. They may also yet play in next season's Champions League.

MARCO REUS CELEBRATES FOR DORTMUND
Meanwhile, Dortmund must wonder how they lost. They began with barnstorming brilliance in what was Liverpool's 360th European game, spread over more than half a century. Dortmund became the first visitors to score twice in the opening 10 minutes at Anfield, and at that stage it seemed that they would also become the first German side to taste victory on this turf.
The build-up featured an extended version of "You'll Never Walk Alone" just as it did before the Manchester United game; sometimes the three-minute rendition is just not long enough. And after the final whistle, Anfield echoed to the same sound.
2. Dortmund's deadly attackers strike quickly
DORTMUND COACH CELEBRATES THE SECOND GOAL
Liverpool had kept Dortmund's famed front three quiet seven days earlier but this Thursday night, there would be no repeat. Within nine minutes, two of them were on the scoresheet and within an hour, all three were, taking their combined tally for the season to 78 goals. The exploits of their Barcelona counterparts can make that sound mundane but it is still a remarkable feat by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Reus. They played with devastating dynamism, and they did it with one star who could have been lining up in red.
Mkhitaryan belongs on a long list of players Liverpool failed to sign during the fruitless search for a marquee signing in the summer of 2013. Almost three years later, they were given added reasons to regret the Armenian's decision to join Dortmund. He supplied the finish after Simon Mignolet reacted acrobatically to save Aubameyang's volley, one No. 10 concluding a move that began when the other, Coutinho, lost the ball in uncharacteristically wasteful fashion.

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG MISSES
That was in the fourth minute, already Aubameyang's second shot. He scored with his third, rifling an effort in at the near post after Reus dispossessed Roberto Firmino and snaked his way through the midfield. The German then emulated his fellow forwards with an astute finish from Mats Hummels' defence-splitting pass.
Beyond that, the surprise was that they did not score more. Every foray forward came laced with danger until Liverpool found attack the best form of defence.
3. Defenders end up on top in mixed night
Thursday's dramatic win amounted to redemption for Liverpool's centre-backs. Lovren and Sakho had been the warriors of the Westfalenstadion but were exposed at Anfield, floundering before each exerted an impact in the opposing penalty box.
Klopp set the tone for an action-packed evening even if his boldness initially seemed to backfire. Liverpool's positivity and excitement made it easy for Dortmund to counter-attack with such panache and pace.

LOVREN  CELEBRATES WITH MAMADOU SAKHO
Their manager's ambitious instincts kicked in when selecting his side. Rather than replacing Jordan Henderson (whose season ended in the first leg) with Joe Allen, he brought in the more attack-minded Firmino. Rather than having three central midfielders as he did to great effect last week, he had  a mere two.
Firmino lost the ball for Dortmund's second goal and spurned a handful of chances, but he is a Klopp favourite and Allen is not. He has only started 12 of 42 games under the German, of which only one, the Capital One Cup semi-final at Stoke, could be considered a major game. While the manager makes a habit of praising the Welshman, actions speak louder than words and team selections suggest he regards Allen as a fringe figure. Yet as much as anything else, Liverpool could have benefited from an extra body in front of their enigmatic defence.

COUTINHO SCORES
Playing a more progressive game places a greater emphasis on the specialist stoppers. Sakho and Lovren struggled as Dortmund profited in particular in the inside-right channel where, four days after a display Klopp ranked as his best for Liverpool, Alberto Moreno's defensive deficiencies were apparent. Sakho then played Reus onside for his goal before playing his part in the fightback.
While Klopp could be rightly criticised for his midfield choices, he can argue he was correct to bench his most potent finisher, Daniel Sturridge. Origi led the line with great verve as he did at Dortmund last week, showing why he is Liverpool's form forward by scoring his fourth goal in three games. It merely tapped the panic bells in the Dortmund defence. When Sturridge and Allen entered, Liverpool properly embarked on their fantastic fight-back.

VETERAN ACTOR, OLU JACOBS, FLANKED BY THE GBADAMOSIS WAS NOT LEFT OUT
INTRODUCING ADESOLA BENSON,

IKORODU-BASED SHOEMAKER FOR GIANTS

COURTESY OF THISDAY NEWSPAPERS, WE BRING YOU THIS MORNING THE INSPIRING STORY OF A LAGOSIAN DOING US PROUD WITH HIS RESOURCEFULNESS AND NEVER-SAY-DIE SPIRIT
He is a young man, with a good head on his shoulders. He is a lad that has tread a terrain usually characterised by dropouts or never do wells. Adesola Omotayo Benson is an Ikorodu-born shoemaker who is gradually carving a niche for himself.  His passion for shoe making was ignited 30 years ago when he was barely 13 years old. Three decades later, Benson is living his dream and is living proof to doubt Thomases that you can actually excel in any field if you put your mind to it. He spoke to Funke Olaode about his sojourn in footwear manufacturing and how he intends to make Ikorodu a Mecca of sorts for shoe aficionados in the country
How old were you when you ventured into shoe making?
I was in Junior Secondary School two (JSS 2) when I stumbled into it and I have not looked back. Honestly, it wasn’t my initial ambition, dream or plan to go into shoe making. My mother was working with the then former military Governor of Lagos State, the late Air Commodore Gbolahan Mudasiru. I went with my mum to visit the governor that fateful afternoon and I joined the children in their playroom. After a few minutes, the governor’s wife came to remind the children not to forget to pick up their shoes at the shoe maker’s place. She asked me if I wanted a pair and I said yes.
So I followed them and saw how the guy was making shoes and I got interested. I got that pair of sandals and when it got spoilt, I went back there and got another one. Of course, my passion was ignited and I looked for a shoe maker very close to my house. Every afternoon I spent four hours learning shoe making. And I was going there throughout my secondary school days. My mum didn’t know that I made shoes. But when I got to class five she caught me with a pair of shoes. Since then I have been doing shoes.
How has the response been?
Well, in Nigeria it is not a vocation that has been tapped into, because I studied it, and if you count four people in Nigeria who studied footwear, I will probably be one of them. You know people have been doing it the way they like. But I see more prospects in it as time progresses.
What is your wife’s response to this unusual job that people believe is meant for drop outs?
Before I got married, my wife knew that I am into shoe making. One day she said her mother has been asking her what I do for a living but she had not said anything to her. I said ‘but you know what I do now’. I am not a lawyer, engineer or medical doctor but a shoe maker. She accepts me that way. While I was going abroad, some people challenged my mum that your son is going abroad to study shoe making. As a matter of fact, most of my friends then don’t associate themselves with me because I am a shoe maker. It is now that they have realised that that is my passion and that I have been doing this for close to three decades. They don’t have a choice if they want to tag along with me.
When did you float your Nigerian company?
After my training, I worked in the United Kingdom but decided to come back home two years ago. I floated my outfit Shola Benson Exclusive Shoes Company four years ago in Sabo, Ikorodu. My family stayed back in the UK and shuttles every now and then.
What do you think set you apart? And why the empowerment programme for 100 shoemakers?
I am fortunate to be educated, apart from what I do, because most of the guys in the footwear industry are not educated. So, I want to empower 100 shoe makers in Ikorodu. I mean people who are not opportune to go to the university or don’t have the financial means to go and learn in the university like I did. I want Ikorodu to be like a city in Italy renowned for shoe making. You know if you come to Italy now a part makes men’s shoes, another makes women’s shoes, children’s shoes and even furniture. Just tell them what you want and they will tell you where to go to. I want Ikorodu to be a Mecca for shoes in Nigeria so that other states in Nigeria can emulate us.
What could have prompted this?
It is because I have passion for humanity and it is just one minute between a rich man and a poor man. A poor man’s misfortune can change to fortune within a second. And because of the situation I found myself I just have to tag along.
Any breakthrough since you started shoe making?
Well, I had made shoes for APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. But the one that brought me to the limelight was a pair of shoes that I made for Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi. He is a man of humility and peace who believes in the unity of Nigeria. His humility humbled me. He is a young man that encourages others to grow. I don’t know him personally. I just admire him from afar and was looking for someone who knows his size. You know everybody kept telling me it is not possible, and somebody even discouraged me that he doesn’t wear made in Nigeria shoes. That put me off.
I took up the courage and made a pair of half shoe for him and looked for a way to get it across with a proposal on developing a footwear industry in Ile-Ife.  I was happy when I learnt that he embraced it and he loved the shoes. Up till date, I have taken six pictures of him wearing the shoes I designed for him. He wore the same shoe when he met with the Cuban Ambassador and wore the same shoe at his traditional wedding to Olori Wuraola in Benin City recently. When he went to see President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, he wore the shoe. That has been my major breakthrough. Since that day, I have been getting calls from people that I should make shoes for them. They said the fact I could make shoes for a man of timber and caliber shows that I can make shoes for them as well.
Do you support the call for made in Nigeria goods?
Yes. On my part, I have been able to train about 10 shoe makers who stayed with me for four years. Training is my area of specialisation and from time to time I have been able to ensure that I supervise them. The local shoe makers will have breakthrough if federal government can encourage local manufacturers like us to make shoes for para-military personnel instead of importing. This will not only encourage us, it will also boost the nation’s economy by patronising made in Nigeria goods.
What challenges do you face in shoe making?
The major challenge is manpower and getting capable hands to work for me. Nigerians are not trained enough to understand how standard shoes are made.  For the next two and half years, I was busy training people on how shoes are being made. We have passed that now and moved to shoe manufacturing.
How do you source for your material?
Interestingly, they are locally sourced. We get it mainly from Mushin in Lagos. Ironically, Nigeria is one of the greatest countries that produce leather. We have so many of them in Kano but 90 per cent of these leathers are exported and later imported back to Nigeria as Wet Blu; it is like a processed leather. They leave it in plane white and bring it back to Nigeria. As manufacturers we can now turn it into the colour of our choice.  For me, the 10 per cent left in the Nigerian markets is what I buy and use locally. So, I am happy about the recent gospel of made in Nigerian goods being propagated by the federal government. It is another way to empower local manufacturers and also boost the nation’s economy.
There is this general belief that most products made locally are sub-standard. What makes your products tick?
My training over the years has really helped me and distinguished my products. I trained in the best schools of fashion and shoes in developed countries. Also, I use pure leather inside and outside for my shoes. I remember I made a shoe for a guy who came back after one year that I should make another one for him. His testimony was that he wore the same shoe for 365 days in a year and its quality has not diminished. I explained to him that I used pure leather for all my shoes. Quality standards have really stood Shola Exclusive Shoes out over the years. I believe so much in quality.
How affordable are your shoes?
I try to make it affordable because I want every living soul to be able to afford and wear my shoes in Nigeria, Africa and, nobody can tell, the world. The cheapest right now is N7, 000
You embraced this vocation at a very tender age and 30 years on, you are still waxing strong. Are you fulfilled?
Absolutely. You know all of us cannot work in multinationals. I have chosen this path and God has been faithful. A few days back, two graduates walked up to me that they wanted to learn shoe making in two years. They said they have been following my trajectory in shoe business in the last one year and made up their minds after the mandatory one year service to toe my line. This is encouraging. Each time I see that people appreciate what I do, I am encouraged to do more.
What is the future of this vocation in Nigeria?
In as much as government has banned the importation of shoes, the future is bright. Most African countries don’t produce shoes and we have a chance to export to African countries. But if Nigeria still imports sub-standard shoes, it is going to have negative effect on local production.

Where would you be in the next 10 years?
I am hoping that in the next 10 years, I would have put down a legacy and become an icon that before you do anything concerning shoe making you have to consult me. If I am able to train 300 people and they in turn train others, the multiplication effect, no doubt, will trickle down on the country’s economy.

Twenty two odd years ago,  a young Nigerian sojourning in a foreign land, Ukraine precisely, embarked on the execution of a God-ordained vision to help transform a nation just emerging from the largely atheistic Soviet Union to a vibrant, God-like, Christian nation. It was a grand vision for a young, impressionable "foreigner" in a country where English, his own nation's lingua franca was not even the national language and was scarcely spoken.

The odds were immense but in the true Nigerian never-say-die spirit, Sunday Adelaja challenged the odd, guided by the unction of God and, today, that tiny seed has grown to become the largest and fastest growing church in Europe.

PASTOR ADELAJA HAS TRANSFORMED MANY LIVES REGARDLESS OF RACE OR COLOUR, THEREBY PROMOTING THE FACT THAT BEFORE GOD, THERE IS NEITHER JEW NOR GENTILE

Nigerians are generally a nice, hard working, resilient and ambitious people. Everywhere we go and in every venture we embark upon,  we love to excel. We love to win and in the past,  this never-say-die spirit has earned huge respect for our nation. In recent years, however, due to the unscrupulous and dishonest acts of a tiny few, especially the get-rich-quick lazy drones such as drug traffickers, money launderers, advance fee fraudsters and corrupt politicians whose acts of infamy have had serious negative impact on the life of their fellow citizens and those of other nations, our national image has been so battered that many innocent Nigerians are made to suffer untold ordeal outside Nigeria.

Then came blessed souls like Pastor Sunday as he is fondly addressed. Through the seed of faith he planted in far away Ukraine in 1994, and the mushrooming of the church from humble beginnings to an international Christian sensation, a great boost has been given to the promotion of everything that is good and enviable about Nigeria. Whenever you travel to Europe now, people who have been so inspired and whose life has been impacted up  by Pastor Adelaja tend to think twice before they stereotype or malign Nigerians. It was the extent of the power of one over years of mal-adventure by others.

Through his faith, resilience and obedience to the call of God, Sunday Adelaja has not only impacted on his nation Nigeria, he has helped transformed his adopted nation of Ukraine. Hundreds of thousands of lives have been renewed and redirected on the path of grace and the nation of Ukraine has never hesitated to show its gratitude.

It is in recognition of Pastor Adelaja's leadership,  vision and patriotism that we are bringing you this tribute and we hope you enjoy the sights and words from Ukraine, a nation lifted high by God through the ministry of a ..... wait.... NIGERIAN PATRIOT.

Please find below, excerpts from the church's website, detailing its recent change of name, history and mission, including a short biography of Pastor Adelaja. We shall also dish you with an insight into the family of Pastor Adelaja as they bond so beautifully in the service of the Lord.

AND THE CHURCH  SAYS:
God has given this church a new name - "The Embassy of the Blessed Kingdom of God for All Nations".

God desires to reveal Himself to people and to establish His Kingdom on earth in order to change everybody’s life for the better. But He always starts with small things.
That’s why on February 6, 1994, seven people got together in one apartment in Kiev to worship the Lord and to know His Word. They didn’t even have an idea that they were laying the foundation for one of the biggest churches in Europe.

This was the beginning of the Word of Faith Church, which in ten years would have about 20,000 members and more than one million people receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

On September 12, 1994 the church was officially registered at Kiev City Administration.

God has a big vision for His church: from growing a strong church with thousands of members out of a handful of people who will take the Gospel into all the world (primarily into China and Arab countries) and will make all nations disciples of Jesus Christ, establishing His Kingdom on the Earth.

God found a man with the potential for making this church’s vision a reality. He called Sunday Adelaja from Nigeria to serve Him in Ukraine. Right now Pastor Sunday has an international apostolic ministry, helping plant new Christian churches in Ukraine and other countries as well.
